Got a Question About Your Hearing Care?

Find quick, clear answers to your most common hearing care queries, from booking your first appointment to looking after your hearing aids.

Before Your Appointment:

Do I need a GP referral to book a hearing test?

Absolutely not, you can book a hearing test directly with us, no GP referral needed at all. At Hear4U, we make it simple for you to take control of your hearing health. If our audiologists notice anything that needs medical attention, we will guide you on the right next steps.

Hearing tests usually take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on your individual needs. Our expert audiologists will take their time to explain each stage clearly, so you will always know what is happening and why it is happening.

It is helpful to bring any existing hearing aids, if you have any, a list of current medications, and details of your hearing history, if you have them. You are also welcome to bring a family member or a friend; having someone who understands your daily hearing experience can be really valuable.

Yes, of course. Many people prefer to bring a partner, friend or relative for extra support. They can also share their perspective on how your hearing affects day-to-day life, which helps our audiologists tailor the right care for you.

Our private hearing tests start from £60, and in many cases, that fee is redeemable if you decide to go ahead with hearing aids. We also offer free hearing tests at selected clinics and on open days throughout the year.

During Your Visit

What happens during a hearing test?

When you walk into the clinic on your appointment day, the audiologist will first have a friendly chat about your hearing history, lifestyle, and any changes you have noticed. This helps us understand your listening environments, whether that is a conversation at work, TV at home, or background noise in busy places.

Followed by that, we will conduct a few simple, pain-free tests using specialised equipment to measure how well you hear different sounds and speech. You will wear headphones in a quiet room and respond when you hear tones at various volumes and pitches. Some tests may also include speech recognition or bone conduction checks to give us a full picture of your hearing health.

When the test is complete, your audiologist will take time to explain your results clearly, using easy-to-understand visuals. We will also discuss your options, including taking preventive steps, considering hearing aids, or exploring further treatment if needed.

Hearing loss often happens gradually, so it can be tricky to notice at first. Common signs include needing to turn up the TV volume, having difficulty following group conversations, or feeling that people seem to “mumble.” You might also notice fatigue after social gatherings, a sign your brain is working harder to fill in missed words.

If any of this sounds familiar, it is a good idea to book a hearing test. Our Audiologists at Hear4U use advanced diagnostic equipment to identify even the earliest signs of hearing loss and guide towards personalised solutions.

Yes, the results will be shared with you straight after your hearing test. We believe in complete transparency, and you will see your audiogram (a chart of your hearing levels) and receive a better understanding and explanation of what it means.

If any hearing loss is detected, our audiologist will walk you through suitable hearing aid options, demonstrate how they work and discuss your next steps. We never rush our patients into a decision; we are there to support you in making your decision at your own pace.

Often, yes, but if not, the very next available day. If our audiologist notices earwax build-up during your hearing test, we will do our best to arrange same-day earwax removal, subject to availability at your clinic. Removing earwax before or after your test can improve both comfort and test accuracy.

Our clinicians are trained in earwax removal, using a gentle, precise method to achieve the best results. Find out more about our Earwax Removal Services.

Absolutely, not. Hearing tests are completely safe and non-invasive. You will simply sit in a quiet room wearing headphones while listening to a series of tones and speech sounds. Your audiologist will guide you step by step, ensuring you feel relaxed and confident throughout.

Most clients describe the test as “surprisingly easy” and often feel reassured after finally understanding what has been happening with their hearing.

Aftercare & Hearing Aids

How long does it take to get used to hearing aids?

Everyone’s experience is a little bit different, but most people adjust within two to four weeks. At first everyday sounds may seem louder or sharper, that is completely normal. Your brain simply needs a bit of time to relearn how to process sound. During this period, our audiologist will schedule follow-up appointments to fine-tune your hearing aids and make sure they feel comfortable. We will also share simple tips to help you settle in quickly, such as wearing your aids for short periods of the day and gradually increasing the time.

A little daily care goes a long way. Wipe your hearing aids gently with a soft, dry cloth at the end of the day to remove moisture and wax. Avoid using wipes or spray unless they are specifically made for hearing aids. For a deeper clean, we recommend visiting the clinic every few months. Our team can professionally clean, dry and check your devices to make sure they keep working at their best.

First, check the simple things: make sure it is turned on, replace the battery or recharge it, and check that the tubing or filters aren’t blocked with wax. If it still doesn’t work, don’t worry, we are here to help. You can drop into one of our clinics, book a quick appointment or call us for advice. Our audiologists fix your ear issues on the spot by our in-house audiologists.

When you start wearing hearing aids, we recommend a hearing review every six months to make sure your devices are turned to your needs and your hearing hasn’t changed. Regular check-ups also help us clean, test, and update your aids so they continue performing perfectly. If you feel your hearing has changed soon than that, you can book an appointment at any time, we are always here to help.

It is more common to need a few small adjustments after you start wearing hearing aids. If they feel uncomfortable or you notice any sort of soreness, then should contact us right away. Our audiologists can make quick tweaks to improve the fit or adjust the sound settings, so they feel completely natural. Comfort is the key, your hearing aids should feel like an effortless part of your day.

Home Visits & Accessibility

Do you offer home visits for hearing tests?
