Choosing Hearing Aids

Find all the information you need on what factors control which hearing aid is best for you.

Which hearing aid is best for my kind of hearing loss?

Hearing loss is always on a spectrum and can vary wildly from person to person. Audiologists classify hearing loss as the number of decibels that you no longer hear. Let’s take a look at the different levels of hearing loss.

Level of Hearing LossRecommended Hearing Aid
Mild
Between 21-40dB
Receiver-in-Canal (RIC). If low frequencies are normal, an open fitting RIC is best advised to avoid over-occluding and ‘head-in-a-bucket’ feeling.
Moderate
Between 41-70dB
RIC with a more closed fitting / In-the-Ear (ITE) with appropriate venting / Behind-the-Ear (BTE) with skeleton or shell mould.
Severe
Between 71-95dB
RIC with custom-fit receiver tip to secure seal for adequate high frequency gain / ITE with full shell / BTE with shell mould
Profound
95dB or more
BTE / High-Power BTE / RIC with ultra-power receiver
Note that different technology levels and types will be appropriate for different people according to their level of loss and individual circumstance: these are only suggestions. It is always recommended that you check with your audiologist or one of our Hear4U specialists to ascertain your level of hearing loss before purchasing a hearing aid so that you can get what is best for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What hearing aid you eventually opt for will ultimately depend on your level of hearing loss and what you wish to get out of your hearing aid. Do you prefer more functionality, or a less visible option? It’s always best to check with your audiologist before deciding.

Modern hearing aids come with a whole host of benefits that vary based upon brand and model. Nowadays hearing aids can have full Bluetooth functionality that connects with other wireless devices like TV streamers, mobile phones and microphones, and additional features like fall detection, advanced AI hearing and auto-tuning. It all depends on the model!

Our sister company, Hearing Aid Accessories, stocks all kinds of tools to get the best out of your devices. Whether it’s cleaning products, part replacements or nifty gadgets, they have you covered. You can learn more about them here.

At the moment, we do not provide any waterproof hearing aids. However, don’t worry: different waterproof hearing aids are set to be released in the coming year!

It’s important to remember that hearing aids are not a panacea. It’s likely your hearing will never be quite as it once was before it was damaged, but for many, the extra amplification that people receive through their hearing aids can be an absolute life-changer.

It didn’t take that long, and it was all done. To have one ear done (earwax removed), and then I decided to have both ears done just like that.

I don’t think we’d get anywhere better really, it’s an ideal setup. Travel a small distance by car or taxi, whatever you feel like. It’s ideal for us and anybody else, it’s (The Hear4U Centre) right in a central place.
