Microsuction

Ear wax removal using the most advanced technique in the industry for a hassle-free experience

What is Microsuction ear wax removal?

Also known as ear vacuuming, microsuction earwax removal is the most commonly used manual technique that your doctor is likely to recommend.

The procedure is relatively simple: a slender nozzle is inserted gently into the ear so that the excess wax can be siphoned out using a miniature vacuum. The entire process lasts only a few moments (typically between 10 to 25 mins), and, once the wax is dislodged, our audiologist will remove it with either the vacuum itself, a small pair of forceps or a specialized tool known as the ‘Jobson Horne’. An alternative version, which uses an endoscope for increased accuracy, is also available from us at Hear4U.

How effective is it?

A study in 2014 indicated that the procedure was up to 91% effective at removing build-up in a sample of 159 people. It has additional benefits compared to the alternatives, too: the speed, precision and lack of moisture involved means that microsuction can be performed on people with a history of ear surgery, an outer ear infection or even a ruptured eardrum. However, the process is not without its drawbacks and you should always consult with our healthcare professionals before undergoing treatment. Our specialist may advise you to use more olive oil spray (Earol) to further soften the remaining wax before your return appointment. We advise patients to use Earol or Almond Oil for 3-4 days prior to appointment. However, if you are aware of an infection or a perforated eardrum, we advise you to not use any drops whatsoever. No water is placed into the ear – meaning that it is what is known as a ‘dry’ method of removal that both reduces the risk of infection or pushing the wax further into the ear canal. If you have a perforated eardrum, grommet inserted, a mastoid cavity or a cleft palate, you should not have Water Irrigation to remove your wax. Instead, Microsuction – or its Endoscopic equivalent – are the ideal procedures for you.

Are there any side effects?

The procedure, while effective, can have mild side effects such as the following:

  • Minor levels of dizziness
  • Discomfort in the ear canal
  • Reduced hearing
  • An increased sensitivity to audio stimulus.

Thankfully, much of these effects are only temporary and the process itself should be completely painless. Injury and infection are extremely rare, but you should always inform our specialists should you experience any further complications.

How safe is it?

One limitation of using operating microscopes (also known as loupes) to remove earwax is that, unlike endoscopic microsuction, the view provided is fairly narrow. As a result, patients may be required to move their heads more often in order to get the most accurate view. Overall, though, microsuction is one of the safest, most comfortable and speediest ways to remove earwax build up. Do note, however, that no method of wax removal is entirely risk-free. There are always certain risks, which we ensure that our patients are aware of. Some of these risks include:
  • Possible damage to the eardrum in the case of error.
  • A temporary or permanent loss of hearing due to the occasionally loud noise in the ear – although we take extra precautions to avoid this and will remove the device immediately in the case of discomfort.
  • Tinnitus (although this is rare).
  • Slight dizziness – this can be as a result of the process of cooling the temperature inside the ear canal (rare and of short duration).

Read About Our Happy Customers

I attended the Hinckley Road branch of Hear4U on 5th August 2021 and found the whole experience stress free.

The surroundings are very relaxing, the reception was friendly (even the dog was friendly) and the audiologist was efficient, informative and very professional. Moreover, she succeeded in removing the wax from my right ear (which had been blocked for many weeks in spite of using all sorts of wax removing remedies) such that a minimum level of hearing has been restored where, previously, there was none. I shall certainly be attending again whenever the need arises.

Highly recommended.
